COVID and India

"India is having the worst COVID crisis in the world" - let's have a look - statistically. I would try to compare the numbers of India against Germany, UK and US - three of the most developed countries in the world.
Looking at the "new cases per day", which is the only info we see every day on the news, it looks really scary... Looks everyone in India is getting COVID. But is it really the case?

How many people are dying every day? Like we have seen in the US before, but still a lot...

Now, one should remember that India's population is not in millions, but billions. This makes the numbers not directly comparable. So, let's have a look at some real statistics now - comparing India's COVID crisis against US, UK and Germany - but this time with normalised values - how many per million (per 10 lakhs according to the Indian numbering system).
The crisis in the past has been far far worse in those 3 countries. Even the current numbers are similar to Germany's, close to US's
"New deaths per million" also tells us the same story as "new cases per million".
So far, we had a look at the "per day" figures.
Now what about the total number of cases per million till date?
India: 13041.345
Germany: 39847.300
UK: 65186.618
US: 97206.851
How about the total number of deaths per million?
India: 145.787
Germany: 982.587
UK: 1881.168
US: 1732.255
Still India is having the worst crisis?

Now many of you would say: Aah the Indian numbers are incomplete, there are many more unreported cases. Yes, I agree. But also, I believe the population of India isn't just 1.38 billion as the official figure. So even you add those unreported cases and while normalising, consider the real population of India - the normalised figures might not be that different.

My conclusion: the Indian COVID crisis is no different than what has happened or is happening in other countries. But only time will tell how this unfolds in the following weeks, months... For now, STOP panicking, maybe stop listening to those stupid news media which are selling you the "raw" numbers - have a look at the data yourself. Follow the hygiene rules and live in happiness...
